EMGS are measured from the gastrocnemius-soleus (GS) muscle group (also known as the triceps surae) and from the tibialis anterior (TA). The TA electrodes are placed lateral to the femur - at about a third of the distance from the kneecap to the lateral malleolus. The GS electrodes are placed on the lateral head of the gastrocnemius - superior to its inferior border. Both sets of electrodes are oriented in a bipolar configuration, parallel to the muscle fibre orientation. A reference (ground) electrode is placed on the patella.
