Electrode performance can be improved by minimizing electrode output impedance and maximizing amplifier input impedance. The differential amplifier (used with electrodes in a bipolar configuration) should also have a high common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR). Unprepared skin results in input impedance mismatch and thus lowers the CMRR.
Before an electrode is applied, the skin should be shaved and rubbed vigorously with alcohol.
In order to reduce motion artifact due to relative movement between the electrode, its cables and the skin, the electrodes and part of the cable are secured to the leg using 3M micropore tape. (See below for ordering information).
