We use the AMANDA facility to automate and organize the archival of the UNIX machines.
1.Change the backup tapes every morning. There are two sets of tapes running simultaneously. One tape backup (BIOMED) on Cortex which backs up the REKLAB machines. The tape backup (AUDILAB) on Hankle backs up the AUDILAB disks. The configuration files for BIOMED is on Cortex (/usr/local/amanda/etc/BIOMED) and on Hankle for AUDILAB (/usr/local2/amanda/etc/audilab).
2. When the root sends a message at about 16:00 (16:30 for AUDILAB) and it says expecting BIOMED (AUDILAB) VOL## (where ## is the volume number) make sure that the correct tape is in the backup device.
3. If the correct tape is in the backup device then there is something wrong with the volume label and the tape label has to be written again. The tape label can only be written in su mode.
To write the label issue the folowing command:
/usr/local/amanda/sbin/amlabel biomed VOL## (where ## is the volume
number).
Next, check to make sure that the tape label has
been written correctly by:
/usr/local/amanda/sbin/amcheck biomed
This should now say that vol## ok.
4. In the morning if there are error messages in the backup report inform Rob and call or e-mail Paul Mercure at: 398-6505 or merp@hep.physics.mcgill.ca.
5. There are two set of backup tapes: one for each tape drive (REKLAB & AUDILAB: VOL00 thru VOL09). The tapes are rotated every weeknight.
