Determining the ankle's axis of rotation

Results from anthropometric studies of the human cadaver foot gives a means of locating the axis of rotation of the ankle (or axis of the talocular joint) with respect to anatomical landmarks on the leg. The reference landmarks are the medial and lateral malleoli. Note that the formulae for determining the axis of rotation are statistical averages and represents an estimate of the actal axis. The figures below illustrate how to proceed.
